Getting Started
01 · 3 QUESTIONSHow much does the GetDefensive.com course cost?
Our internet defensive driving course is priced at the state-set minimum of $25 — the lowest legally allowed in Texas. This includes standard US mail delivery of your Texas certificate of completion.
Prices may be slightly higher if you choose the DVD or streaming video format, or if you add an upgrade like Same Day Processing, expedited shipping, or your Texas Driver Record.
Am I eligible to take this course for ticket dismissal?
Under Texas state law, you can only use a defensive driving course to dismiss one ticket every 12 months. If you're not certain when you last completed one, contact your traffic court — they'll confirm your current eligibility before you register.
You'll also need approval from the court that issued your citation. They'll typically give you a deadline by which the course must be completed
Is this course approved by my Texas court?
Yes. GetDefensive.com is 100% recognized by every court in the State of Texas for online ticket dismissal. Our TDLR (Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation) Provider Number is C2491, which appears on your certificate.
The State of Texas certifies our online course as fully equivalent to a traditional classroom-based defensive driving program.
Taking the course
02 · 4 QUESTIONSCan I take the course on more than one computer or device?
Yes — you can finish the course from multiple computers, your tablet, or your phone. The course runs a quick browser compatibility check the first time you log in from a new device to make sure everything will work smoothly.
Can I start and stop the course whenever I need to?
Yes. You're not required to take the course all at once. Stop whenever life gets busy and resume right where you left off. The course saves your progress automatically — chapter, position on the page, and quiz results.
Plenty of students finish in a single sitting, and plenty stretch it across a week. Either way works.
How long does the course take to complete?
The course is built to the Texas state-mandated 6-hour minimum seat time. There are timers on each section to make sure you don't blow through it too fast — but you can take longer if you like.
You'll have access to your account for at least 90 days after registration, so there's no rush to finish in one sitting.
Is the online course really equivalent to a classroom course?
Yes. The State of Texas certifies our online course as fully equivalent to the classroom version — same curriculum, same final exam, same certificate. The only difference is you don't have to drive across town to sit in a folding chair for six hours.
We also offer a Texas Drug and Alcohol Awareness Program for drivers who need it.
Quizzes & final exam
03 · 3 QUESTIONSWhat if I miss a lot of the chapter quiz questions?
It's still totally fine. The chapter quizzes are practice — they don't count against your overall grade. They're there to help you prepare for the final exam, not to test you.
Miss as many as you need to. Just don't skip them, because they're the best preview you'll get of the final.
What format is the final exam?
The final exam is multiple choice, plain language, no trick questions. It covers material from every chapter, and the passing threshold is set by the State of Texas at 70%.
You can go back and review any chapter while taking the exam if you need a refresher on a topic
What happens if I don't pass the final exam on the first try?
You can retake the final exam as needed until you pass. There's no additional charge to retake it. Most students who don't pass on the first attempt review their weakest chapters and pass on the second try.
Certificate & court
04 · 4 QUESTIONSDo I need to give a copy of my certificate to the court?
Yes. Once you pass the final exam, we mail your Texas certificate of completion to the shipping address you entered at registration. You then present it to the court by or before your court due date.
Don't miss that deadline — every Texas court has a hard cut-off.
My court date is right around the corner — can I get my certificate faster?
Yes. For a small upgrade fee, select Same Day Processing at registration (or add it later from Member Services) and we'll process your certificate the same day you finish.
Combined with expedited or electronic shipping, your certificate can be in your hands as early as the morning after you complete the course.
What delivery options do you offer for the certificate?
You have several options, selectable at registration or anytime during the course:
Standard US Mail: 5–7 business days (included in base price).
Expedited shipping: 1–3 business days.
Same-Day Processing: ships the day you finish.
Electronic delivery: emailed PDF within hours.
Click Member Services at any point during the course to change your delivery method.
I lost my certificate — can I get a replacement?
Yes. Contact us at 1-800-851-3007 or through Member Services and we can reissue your certificate for a small replacement fee. We keep your course records on file, so reissuing is quick
Insurance discount
05 · 3 QUESTIONSWill I get an insurance discount for taking this course?
Most Texas auto insurance carriers offer policyholders a discount of up to 10% for successfully completing a TDLR-approved defensive driving course like ours.
Before signing up, we recommend a quick call to your local auto insurance agent to confirm your specific policy qualifies — every carrier handles it slightly differently.
Can I use the same course for both ticket dismissal AND insurance?
Yes. When you complete the ticket dismissal version of the course, you'll receive two copies of your certificate of completion — one to give to the court, and one to submit to your auto insurance agent.
How long does the insurance discount last?
Most Texas carriers honor the defensive driving discount for three years from your course completion date. After that, you can take the course again to renew it.
Confirm the exact terms with your insurance agent, since some carriers offer longer or shorter discount periods.
Account & support
06 · 3 QUESTIONSWhat's your refund policy?
We offer a full refund within 30 days of registration, as long as you haven't received your certificate of completion. Contact our support team and we'll process the refund — no awkward questions
Do you offer the course in Spanish?
Yes — we offer a fully translated Spanish version, Curso de Manejo Defensivo en Español. It's the same TDLR-approved content, taught in Spanish, with a Spanish-language certificate accepted by every Texas court.
